Oh! You Pretty Things curated by Spring Studios

An exhibition of fashion-tastic photography at the Liberty exhibition space this February and March.

Curated by the ever-innovative people over at Spring Projects, this show features work that twitches between high-end glam and something more than a little LA-style trashy. Look out in particular for Alice Hawkins' deceptively complex images.

All works on show are for sale; original limited edition prints ranging from £250 to £2,500s.

8th February – 14th March

We heart Jasper Garvida

London based designer Jasper Garvida was born on the Philippines and lived in Toronto before deciding to move to London to study fashion design at Central St. Martins College. After graduating he designed for couture labels but quickly moved to the High Street to design for the mass market.

His dresses are sexy and colourful but get really interesting after a second look when you discover his amazing cuts and fabrics. His designs are admired by the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Liz Hurley and Sophie Dahl. Jasper also does bridal tailoring and bespoke services. Visit his website for more information.

He stocks in London in Sub Couture, 204 Kensington Park Road, W11 1NR.

Pop-up fashion

One knows that London Fashion Week is getting closer when news about fashion flash stores are starting to spread.

Comme des Garçons was the first brand opening so-called "Guerilla stores" (shops that open in an empty space just for a couple of days or weeks). In London, Pam Hogg and twenty8twelve recently opened a flash shop, both in the trendy Newburgh Quarter.

This Autumn, during London Fashion Week there are more exiting shops about to open. Kinder Aggugini, who debuted at last season's LFW, will open a shop on Mount Street in Mayfair from September 19th to October 31st.

On|Off, the independent fashion showcase, will open a shop on Newburgh Street from September 19th to September 22nd, selling Jean-Pierre Braganza or Pam Hogg. The shop will also host various fashion shows and events.

Poltock & Walsh, Kate Moss's favourite label popped up in the East End, 57 Amwell Street, and will stay there for five months.

Make sure to put those dates in your diary as it would be a real shame to miss it!

Trend report A/W 09: The bold shoulder

One of the biggest trends for this Autumn and Winter is definitely the bold shoulder. Shoulder pads, which were huge in the 80's, celebrate a comeback - and have never looked better.

The trend kicked off with Balmain and their S/S 09 collection and soon invaded various catwalks and high streets all over the world. Designers now experiment with the exaggerated shoulders and let them look almost architectual and very extreme - see Roksanda Ilincic or Dolce & Gabbana. Yves Saint Laurent is approaching the trend in a softer and more feminine way and Balenciaga and Stella McCartney form a round shoulder as worn in the 19th century.

The key is to keep the rest of the look simple - choose a figure hugging ensemble to really draw the eye to the shoulders. An all black esemble will look just as good as experimenting with colours. Power dressing is back - and we love it!

SHOWstudio

On Bruton Place, right off Bruton Street SHOWstudio just opened their shop in Mayfair, selling an exclusive selection of one-of-a-kind fashion creations by designers, artists or photographers. Unique artworks which have been used in catwalk shows or photo shoots can be purchased in their shop or online at SHOWstudio.com. The flagship pieces are without doubt the tiger created for the Spring/Summer 2010 Alexander McQueen PUMA
campaign Crane Vs. Tiger or the Dollar Sign by Nick Knight, created for a W Magazine editorial in 2003.

SHOWstudio does not only sell those amazing pieces but they have also created a completely new retail concept. They will invite designers to create unique pieces in front of webcams, the process of creation will be showcased in real time on the web and a few lucky ones even will be invited to the store to watch. The final piece will then be available for sale through SHOWstudio. A few famous names have been dropped so make sure you don't miss it!

The September Issue

This year we’ve been treated to some amazing fashion films but the biggest sensation is yet to come. “The September Issue” is a documentary about US-Vogue’s Anna Wintour preparing the biggest Vogue issue ever – the 2008 fall-fashion issue.

The trailer has just been released and we are addicted already. This film will definitely uncover what was really true or false about “The Devil Wears Prada” and will reveal how the biggest fashion magazine works, how they decide what's hot and what's not and who is in and who is totally last season. Release date is September 11th. We can’t wait!!

Pret-a-Paris

The haute couture  fashion week in Paris just came to an end. People from all over the world gathered together to see the most expensive clothes by couture heroes such as Chanel, Christian Lacroix or Elie Saab. During these couture shows concepts such as the credit crunch or recession simply do not exist. The designers create some of the most precious and beautiful pieces, their mantra is “the more the better”.

Colours which dominatedat Givenchy, Giorgio Armani Privé or Chanel were black, white, silver and gold together with cream shades or dark purple and blue. Only John Galliano experimented at Dior with super bright colours such as orange and pink. What the Violet May girls love about the Haute Couture shows is the romantic wonderland our favourite designers create each year. Pure unadulterated escapism!

Jimmy Choo for H&M

An exciting new collaboration between high end and high street will launch in November. As per the recent announcement, our favourite shoe designer of all times (well, alongside Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik) Tamara Mellon will exclusively design a Jimmy Choo collection for Swedish high street brand H&M. The collection will not only include shoes, but also bags and even women’s apparel. Since Tamara Mellon launched the brand in 1996, Jimmy Choo has represented independence, power and femininity. Now the luxury shoes will be available for to all women who wanted to be a part of this universe but were not able to afford it and that’s truly great! The collection will be available from November 14th in selected H&M stores.
